जनता  सच  कहती  है इसमें  झूठ  नहीं है ;

ठीक  है तुम  संसद  में  बैठो  हम  सड़कों  पर ;

हिन्दू - मुस्लिम - सिख- इसाई  में मत  बांटो  ;

भ्रष्टाचारी  जो है उसको फांसी दे  दो  ;

लगा  लाल  बत्ती    हम पर  रौब  जमाओं  ;

E-Grocery Retailing - A Trend Picking up in India

Since the advent of 21st century India has been a witness to a lot of new trends entering Indian markets, all this because of the economic reforms that the country went through and because of which a lot of innovative platforms of technologies started entering India and the Indian customers started getting exposed to these trends. This had an effect on the kind of lifestyles the people in India started living. The people got busy because of the new work timings emerging as the Private sector started becoming a bigger employer year after year and the demands of work started increasing and people started spending more time at work than at their homes and with their families. This had more effect as even the females which usually took care of the home and the children too started working and this led to an increase in the number of working couples and so both the partners started having less time to go to the markets and even if they had some time they did not want to spend that time in the heat or cold of the market after an exhaustive day at work.
And it is because of this phenomenon that the concept of E-Grocery stores started emerging in the Indian market too. E-Grocery stores which no doubt is still in its infancy stage, has started on a small scale only in metros and other A-class cities only (Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore etc are a few cities where it is picking up fast), but as the Indian diaspora starts getting more and more exposure to the private sector jobs and with more working couples increasing in these cities, this industry is going to start grabbing more and more market share of the $343 billion food and grocery market of India and it can grow at the compounded growth rate of 30 percent annually over the next five years. This sudden acceptance of new phenomena is not by any chance, but because of the new technologies that have entered the market and have started getting Indians hooked up to them. This can be attributed to the internet penetration in the urban households increasing every day and then because of the new technology platforms like smartphones which allow individuals to use all the internet applications on their phones only and they need not open their PC's or laptops to access these features. Then technology has also enabled these stores to become more efficient at supply chain handling, better customer order handling and then also at understanding how the customers shop and at understanding their preferences. This new wave of technology acceptance is now enabling E-Grocery retailing to grow in India which is a household phenomenon in western countries and has started picking up in China and other developing countries in Asia too. There are various E-grocery stores like Big-basket(the only E-grocer to be able to attract the investment from venture capitalists), MyGrahak, Family Kart, Chennaionlinegrocery.com, Town essentials and Atmydoorsteps.com.
The technological platform being followed by E-gorcers is as follows -

Other reason for E-Grocery to start picking up is that now the companies have funds available to them in market but still very less as compared to the total requirement of the market to grow at a faster pace. Then technological advances have been enabling the entrepreneurs to be able to keep track of their inventory levels which they can keep to a minimal level because of the technological tie-ups with suppliers and still be able to take care of all the orders of their customers right on time. Then with the help of software packages which can help them in analysing how their customer visit their websites and what kind of purchase patterns they follow so that they can suggest their customers some purchases in advance coupled with some promotional offers which have been designed by studying their past purchase behaviors.
Many such stores are there in the market which are more or less self funded stores but now with capital being available somewhat easier because venture capitalists and angel investors understanding that their investment can yield to higher returns, more and more stores are trying to expand.
Though there are a lot of challenges like how to keep a tab on the supply chain costs, wafer thin margins, having more stock points closer to the customers, the delivery costs and how much inventory to maintain, but it still has a lot of scope to grow in India, because of the new lifestyle segment of working couples emerging in the market which is only going to grow in the times to come. So lets see whether this new boom in the E-Commerce front is able to succeed by developing a sustainable business model this time around or it is also going to take the path that E-commerce bubble took in the beginning of this new millennium.
